The Performance

The starting point for this project, by the artist Gordon Flemons, was the idea of “site as a performed place”. This is the notion that the character and identity of a place arises from the daily routines performed by those who live and work there.

The Communities

A wide range of community groups have been involved with the project, from a training centre to faith based groups and an activity centre for the over 50s. This will develop into a larger picture of the Colchester Community as a whole.

Recording The Tracks

Volunteers from each group carried GPS data loggers on their daily commutes tracing paths in space and time. This data creates virtual 3D drawings unique to each group by plotting latitude and longitude against time.

The Shape

The shapes are created by the routine journeys made by community members as they travel to and from their meeting place. In this way the shape, or form, of a community evolves from the interaction of its members with their environment.

Share Video Phone Clips

The 3D drawings were made into short animations that can be viewed by following links for each community. You can also download a version to play on your mobile phone and share with friends.
